Seven scenic zones, three land routes and one coastline: how to split 1–2 days on the mountain, which cableway saves which climb, and the small things — shoes, weather, tea fields — that make the trip.
Laoshan is not one mountain with one gate — it is a 446 km² patchwork served by three land routes and a coastline. The two routes travelers genuinely love, according to the scenic area’s own guidance and thousands of Trip.com reviews, are the Jufeng summit area and the coastal Liuqing–Yangkou line; Beijiushui is the easy, family-friendly third. Each deserves most of a day, which is exactly why the recommended visit time is 1–2 days.
Quick answer: One day? Do the southern line (Taiqing Palace → Qingshan → Yangkou) — it packs temples, the sea and a cableway into a single day. Two days? Add Jufeng at sunrise and finish with the waterfalls of Beijiushui.
The main peak stands 1,132.7 m above the sea — the highest coastal summit in China. A loop of stone walkways circles the peak past inscribed boulders; on clear days you see the coastline bending around Qingdao, and on overcast ones you stand above a rolling sea of clouds. Sunrise here is the classic Laoshan photograph. The zone uses its own entrance, sightseeing bus and cableway, and its ticket is separate from the coastal lines.
Founded in 140 BC on a sheltered bay, Taiqing is the largest and oldest of Laoshan’s monasteries — “the second Quanzhen grove under heaven”, as its stone stele claims. Courtyards of ancient ginkgo and cypress, bronze statues of Laozi, the study where Pu Songling is said to have written “The Taoist Priest of Laoshan”, and a sea-facing terrace that explains why Taoists chose this mountain a hundred generations ago.
The most popular single stop on the coast: a chairlift-style cableway floats over turquoise water to a ridge guarded by the giant red Longevity character carved into the cliff. The brave squeeze through Mitian Cave — a natural granite chimney so narrow and dark you climb it by feel — and pop out onto a balcony of rock above the beach. Bring a flashlight for the cave; skip it if you are claustrophobic.
The gentlest and, after rain, the most beautiful route: eighteen clear pools named “nine waters and eighteen pools” are stitched together by cascades over smooth white granite. Shaded paths make it the summer favorite of Qingdao families, and reviewers rave about the sound of running water the whole way. Reached via Metro Line 11 side of the mountain — a different gate from the southern line.
Laoshan is famous for Taoism, but the mountain also keeps one of coastal Shandong’s great Buddhist temples. The carved stone archway with lotus finials, hillside halls and views over the coast make it a quiet half-hour stop on the eastern line between Taiqing and Yangkou.
Between Taiqing and Yangkou, a horseshoe of red roofs tumbles down tea terraces to a turquoise bay — Qingshan is a designated “Chinese traditional village” and the most photogenic stop on the coast. Fishermen still mend nets by the pier; the tea you taste at lunch probably grew on the slope above your table.

Weather rules: cableways suspend in high wind and storms — a common reviewer complaint is arriving to find the funicular closed. Keep the hotline (+86-532-96616) handy and have a walking plan B; every route works on foot if you have the legs.
You can see one route properly: the southern line (Taiqing + Qingshan + Yangkou) is the classic day. Attempting Jufeng and the coast in one day usually means seeing both badly — reviewers consistently say half a day is not enough even for one area.
Match the gate to your ticket: Dahe East (Metro Line 4) for the southern line and Jufeng transfers; the northern gate for Beijiushui (Line 11 side); Yangkou has its own access on the eastern coast. Your ticket line states the direction.
Beijiushui is the family favorite — flat-ish shaded paths, pools and picnic rocks. Yangkou’s cableway plus beach is a hit too. Save Mitian Cave and the Jufeng staircases for teenagers with energy to burn.
